Bunratty Castle as depicted on this pendant was built in 1425 and is a favourite tourist stop in western Ireland. Located in the village of Bunratty, there had been many alterations to the building over 500 years of habitation but restoration work done between 1956 - 1958 removed anything newer than 1619, the date of installation of the decorated chapel ceiling. The original 15th century crenellations were also restored at that time.
In 1646 Admiral Penn was beseiged at Bunratty Castle and eventually fled. His son William is believed to have resided in the castle as an infant; he would go on to found Pennsylvania and play a major part in the development of the United States of America.
The pendant is approx 3 cm across and comes on a 20" curb chain.
